Snow soup at St Lary

I haven’t written anything on this blog for a while because I was on a “skiing” holiday in the Pyrenees last week. Well, it was supposed to be a skiing holiday but we were at St Lary: the snow was like soup and only 25% of pistes were open. A good friend of mine, Stephane, who is an excellent skier, managed 3 hours in total over the course of 2 days before taking his skis back to the hire shop, disgusted with the state of the slopes.

Apart from this disappointment, we had a great time in Sy Lary. The surrounding scenery is breathtaking, with the pyrenees dominating every angle of vision. Its a great place if (like me) you like hiking (”randonnees” in French) and on one day we did a long 20km hike into the foothills and not too far from the Spanish border.

Being brought up in Britain, which has absolutely no ski stations to speak of, I really appreciate going to the mountains in France. The quality of the air makes a nice change from that of Paris, and everything seems so quiet; often the only noise that can be heard is the squark of an Eagle as it glides upwards on the thermals. I think France is really lucky to have this kind of geography and I dont think I’ll ever tire of going on holiday to such places.

We found the chalet that we stayed in on the page promo ski St Lary of the site promotion-ski.com.
